11 Confusing Moments That Prove All Movies Exist In An Alternate Reality

6. Friends Doesn't Exist In Either The Scream Or Apatow Universes - Scream 2 & This Is 40

Universal Pictures

Scream is the most meta- of movies; inter-textual before it was even cool to think self-referentially, and it also fundamentally established an alternate universe in which the film Stab exists, starring real-world actors Tori Spelling and David Schwimmer. Thanks to that movie-within-a-movie casting - as well as Courtney Cox mentioning both Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston in conversation, it's impossible that Courtney Cox could have played Monica opposite them. And in further confusing revelations, in Scream 3, Cox mentions the relationship between Jennifer Jolie (an oddly prophetic contraction of Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie) and Brad Pitt. This Is 40 features a similar paradox, as Paul Rudd's character berates his own sexual prowess:

"I don’t f*ck like Prince... I f*ck like David Schwimmer. I f*ck like Ross from Friends.”

Apparently, Schwimmer was not asked if he would be okay with being the butt of that joke, but Judd Apatow clarified that he didn't mean anything insulting by it.
