11. Curiosity
Holy sh*t, this guy's got a gun. Hang on; who is he?' The opening scenes in any film are what are really going to capture an audience, and Shawshank is no exception. A man with a gun, a wife with her lover, a court case where it's looking like the man's guilty: already there are a whole bunch of questions that need answering. Andy denies his crime: "It's the truth", he says about his defense with his eyes down. Sure thing, Andy, we believe you. Not. Jesus this guy looks shifty. He must have done it. Didn't he? And when you're curious about something, you're going to want to find out what happens. Decision made: it's time to commit and find out just what the hell is going on here. You're in this for the long run.

I love Stephen King and music festivals; I eat my toast upside down; I daydream about getting married probably a bit too much; and I wish every day for a pet sausage dog puppy (who never materialises – sob).
