11 Famous Movies That Actually Taught Us Horrendous Life Lessons

6. Do Whatever You Want; Adults Will Save The Day - The Little Mermaid

Lm Disney is such low hanging fruit when it comes to seemingly innocent movies with shaky morals that I could have populated the entire list with entries just from the Mouse House. But in the name of variety I'm not going the easy route and am instead using only one incredibly glaring example from the official Disney canon. I've gone for The Little Mermaid as not only does it have one of the most glaring examples of a poor lesson, it€™s contemporary enough to not have the defence of €˜different time, different values€™. As is common in the Disney world the teenage Ariel falls in love with Prince Eric on first sight. The only problem? She€™s a mermaid and he€™s a human. So she selfishly barters for human form which leads to a situation where evil witch Ursula has the potential to become Queen of Atlantica. Eventually things work out OK, but there€™s the problem. There€™s some good morals in here and Ariel is refreshing insofar as she acts like a real teenager girl would, but for me it€™s been overridden ever since the Nostalgia Critic did his Disneycember and pointed out Ariel doesn't really develop as character, but is instead saved by the involvement of her father and lover. The Little Mermaid ends with her getting what she wants from greed and reliance on others. It may not be the overt message of the film, but when you break it down that€™s exactly what€™s happened.
