11 Hated Sci-Fi Movies That Became Cult Classics

9. Blade Runner

Starship Troopers
Warner Bros. Pictures

Upon release, no one really liked Blade Runner. Even critics that dug the visual style admitted it lacked humanity. But in any group of friends at a bar or restaurant, there is bound to be one who will gladly die on the tiny hill that Blade Runner is the best film every made. While it's certainly got its own style that's been aped by countless futuristic films g, that friend is overstating; one of the best films ever made wouldn't be so confused about its own identity.e

Yes, with a tinge of irony, a film about robots who are uncertain of their nature is uncertain of its own intent, themes and even plot, hence the multiple cuts available. Nevertheless, the thrust of the story is Harrison Ford's future P.I. eliminating escaped replicants from another planet trying to live out their days before their time expires. Until Denis Villeneuve's sequel in 2017, it was unclear whether or not Ford's Rick Deckard was a replicant himself (spoiler: he isn't).

Though don't ask Ridley Scott. The original director of the film is certain Deckard is a slave bot.

And the debate over which of the many cuts is superior, along with Scott's own incoherence on the matter, make Blade Runner one of the most enduring sci-fi films out there.

Kenny Hedges is carbon-based. So I suppose a simple top 5 in no order will do: Halloween, Crimes and Misdemeanors, L.A. Confidential, Billy Liar, Blow Out He has his own website - thefilmreal.com - and is always looking for new writers with differing views to broaden the discussion.
