Varsity Blues is one of the most sadly under-rated teen movies ever made. Some will probably view that as something of a poisoned chalice, given the stigma attached to the genre, but it is as genuinely important to the history of American cinema as the road movie or the slasher flick, and Varsity Blues is right up there. The film combines an irresistibly uplifting narrative arc, with an element of David and Goliath, as well as a good old-fashioned love story, and plays it out against the most cinematic of all American cultural fascinations, American Football. And most importantly, it also introduced us to the whipped cream bikini. Sported by the delectable Ali Larter, making her first forray into the worl of feature films, this particular costume has subsequently gone on to be a regular occurrence at my dinner parties. My figure isn't quite as good as Larters, but what I lack in womanly curves I more than make up for in enthusiasm. Oh, and if that wasn't enough, it also featured this brilliant song on the soundtrack...
