Their allegiance to the French throne calls for exploratory adventures and battles against the intrigues of those who dare to engage in warfare against France, especially if it’s the British.
Through Dumas, the growly Portau is introduced as loyal comrade, albeit a bit rough and very impulsive, who unlike Athos, is not very skillful in expressing himself eloquently neither does he hold a candle to Aramis's vast wisdom. Nonetheless, he has a big heart beneath the entire braggadocios facade.
