11 Movies That Made It Up As They Went Along (But Were Awesome Anyway)

Alien 3 should have been a disaster, given the now notorious production issues it faced. If the director basically disowns the movie (at least by ignoring it entirely), you know it's problematic.

And most of the problems involved were down to the issues with the screenplay, which started with the hiring of at least a dozen writers all with very different ideas of how to make it. If you're up with Alien movie history, you know that included one version with a wooden planet full of monks.

Clearly, the studio got sick of waiting for the right script so they started production in 1991 without one finished - probably still pissed at having wasted $7m on sets and effects that were abandoned with the early scripts. The story became a further issue for the film-makers and several - including Fincher - left before they were supposed to.

And yet, Alien 3 is still a great movie. it's not up to Aliens or Alien, but considering how messed up the production was, the fact that it's even watchable is astonishing. That it's legimitaely good is way beyond that.
