3. Let the Right One In (2008)
In keeping with the themes of dealing with horrific circumstances this brings me to the masterpiece Let the Right One In. The film is a vampire movie but it's far from any type of traditional vampire story in that it deals with it's horror premise in a very unique way. The film is a coming of age drama told as a vampire movie, which creates a very interesting tone in the way it mixes two completely opposite genres to genius effect. On the surface, the main characters of Oskar and Eli are two lonely kids just trying to connect with each other but underneath that story lies sinister undertones of murder and horror that haunt every frame of Let the Right One In. The direction by Tomas Alfredson is simply stunning in how it brings the cold tones of the film into the forefront without losing the warmth of the relationship between Oskar and Eli. Everything here is treated with an unusual touch, for the horror genre, that helps elevate it to one of the best movies of the decade and one of the best vampire movies of all time.
