Episode VII: The Force Awakens isn't out yet but already people are visiting dressed as Jedi.

Reportedly Luke Skywalker's home in the new film, Ireland's breathtaking Skellig Michael dominates the County Kerry horizon for miles.

Before it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 Skellig Michael was home to monks who founded a monastery on it as far back as the 6th century AD. They spent their time praying, living off fish, making their own wine (why not?) and looking out for Vikings who were keen to plunder their wares.

Fortunately, it's remote location and tricky terrain proved to be an effective base and the panoramic views allowed monks to spot Scandinavian invaders a mile off, so it's easy to see why Disney would choose it as a so-called "Jedi Island".

Main filming for Episode VII wrapped last year amidst rumours that film crews would not be allowed back due to damage caused by helicopters. Thankfully a deal was done and scenes for Episode VIII were shot in September 2015 as Luke Skywalker himself returned.

Skellig Michael lies nine miles off the coast and is only reachable by a boat hired from the tiny fishing village of Portmagee, County Kerry.

Even though fans have yet to see it on the big screen, the mystic Skellig Michael is sure to become the most talked-about location of the new Star Wars trilogy.
