11 Safe Good Guy Actors Who Should Have Played More Villains
5. Harrison Ford
Went Bad In... What Lies Beneath Like Tom Hanks, Harrison Ford represents something larger than himself on screen. Throughout his career he has played the handsome, slightly roguish heroes (and occasional anti-heroes with a heart) who women would stereotypically swoon at, and men would want to be (if we were living in a world where trailer voice overs were gospel) and playing too many villains might have been seen as a poor marketing decision by those seeking to preserve the Harrison Ford brand. But in 2000 thriller What Lies Beneath - which will probably have ruined a few bathtimes for anyone who has seen it - Ford turns villain in a remarkably effective switcheroo, and adds a considerable lift to an otherwise limited film (the screenplay is poor and it's too long by about 20 minutes, while the overall concept is a little silly) - which nevertheless puts almost every modern "horror" film released in its wake to utter shame. On the surface, Ford plays the same kind of character as usual, with an everyman accessibility and a seemingly genuine concern for his struggling wife, but the change in his role after the switch is great to watch, particularly for those fans who want to see more from him than Indiana Jones in a different outfit - even if the last ten minutes of the film are downright stupid.
