11 Things You Learn From Watching 336 Films In 2014

1. It's Far Too Easy To Watch Bad Films

If you ever find yourself uttering the words "this truly is a golden age of film-making", you should go and spend some time looking on IMDB or at the Netflix listings that lurk beneath the critically adored and the box office winners, because you will change your tune remarkably quickly. Yes, there are a lot of brilliant films being made, but there are also some that will make you sad to call yourself a film fan. And unfortunately thanks to the age of immediate accessibility and streaming networks, films that have no right to ever be watched (even ironically) end up sitting alongside genuinely good ones, growing in proximity until your brain tricks you into thinking they must be good because you've seen them advertised 8 times in the last three days. It's like you're genuinely being enticed to watch terrible films with Michael Madsen in (he makes about 14 a year, signing contracts with a scatter-gun presumably), and though there is some merit in watching the bad to appreciate the good, when it's about 150 out of 336 you'll regret ever experimenting, which sort of ruins the entire experience. Which were your favourite films of the year? Share your picks below in the comments thread.
