Unapologetically goofy though Moonraker is, it is also an undeniably impressive feat of special effects and production design. Watching the movie today on Blu-ray, it remains a shockingly good-looking visual marvel, with a winning combination of practical miniatures, matte paintings and state-of-the-art compositing techniques.

Ken Adam's production design is meanwhile magnificent, lending a palpable majesty to Drax's space base and helping ensure that practically every penny of that huge budget found its way on-screen.

Considering how horribly sci-fi films can age - especially with more modern CGI techniques - Moonraker laudably finds the Bond franchise at its most technically audacious, regardless of what you make of the rest of the movie.
