11 Unexpected Actors Who Might Win Oscars Next Year
10. John Goodman 10 Cloverfield Lane
The Role: Howard, a man who claims that the outside world has been decimated by a chemical attack. As the movie's only just come out, we won't say anymore than that. Why He Might Win: It's always good to start campaigning early, and Variety got the ball rolling by declaring Goodman's volcanic performance in the monster movie psychodrama Oscar-worthy, which is always good cred to have on your side. More to the point, Goodman has shockingly never been nominated for an Oscar before, and so the Academy may feel that he is "due". Also, the Best Supporting categories tend to make more room for left-field performances than the Best Actor category, so if Goodman can sustain momentum throughout the year, he's got a good chance. Why It's Unexpected: Because who the hell ever thought anyone could get any serious awards consideration or recognition for a freaking Cloverfield movie? That's not to knock Goodman's abilities at all, but simply that nobody would expect to see him scooping up an Oscar nod or win for a film like this when he works with the Coen Brothers so frequently and, despite starring in six of their movies, still hasn't scooped a single nod. It would be shocking, but well-deserved.
