7. Miscasting An Iconic Villain - Aladdin

The Mistake

Though the most recent trailer for Guy Ritchie's controversial live-action Aladdin remake actually seemed a good deal more encouraging than that painful first glimpse, there's one aspect of the film that's still failing to convince audiences.

As amusing as Will Smith's Genie looks in motion, Marwan Kenzari's casting as Jafar is still tough to reconcile. In addition to being far younger and more handsome than the 1992 animated Jafar, his line delivery is flat and he doesn't at all sound or feel like the Jafar fans know and love.

Given that Jafar is a major part of the movie and will partially contribute to its success or failure, it's definitely reasonable to be feeling rather weary about Kanzari's potentially iffy casting.

The Lesson

Topher Grace as Eddie Brock/Venom in Spider-Man 3. This was a big swing and a miss from everyone involved: Raimi reportedly isn't a big fan of Venom and didn't want to adapt the character to the screen anyway, and this was compounded by Grace being fundamentally wrong for the part.

The role requires a far more physically imposing actor - like, uh, Tom Hardy - and Grace's slight build and generally goofy performance were the exact opposite of what was needed.

The new Venom isn't a particularly good movie, but its portrayal of the Brock/Venom dynamic is so much better in the very least.

Though there are times where all the online moaning turns out to be excessive - Heath Ledger's casting as The Joker, for instance - these worries are usually ironed out once the first couple of trailers have dropped.

With Aladdin less than two months from release, then, things sure aren't looking good for Jafar.
