In the years since its release, detractors like to point out that Avatars plot is essentially Pocahontas or FernGully in space. While that's largely true, what cannot be forgotten is what an incredible technical achievement the film was. It pioneered the 3D technology that has been so badly misused in the years since, and it looked unlike anything audiences had ever seen. Considering Avatar is far and away the highest grossing film of all time (although The Force Awakens might soon make a play for that title), its no great surprise that a sequel is coming. James Cameron has been labouring for years over designs and settings, and its likely that hell find a technical way to realize these fantastical elements yet again. With even a marginal improvement on the story, Avatar 2 could go down as one of the greats in the genre. Its almost a guarantee that Avatar 2 is going to captivate prospective audiences in the same way that Star Wars has, but this sequel offers the promise of more than just box office success. Star Wars faced a burden of kicking off a new series of movies whereas Avatar's already-established setting and characters could help immediately kick things into gear.
