11 Ways Star Wars: The Last Jedi Was Basically The Empire Strikes Back

8. There Are Walkers On A White-Coated Planet

One takes place at the beginning of the movie, and one takes place at the end. Here's the main difference.

Here are the similarities: A secret rebel base needs defending. A ground assault is needed (bonus points to you if you can remember why in both cases). There is a soft white coating on the ground. There are trenches and large stationary guns used by the defenders. Walkers are used by the attackers. Strange airborne ships are used which seem to pale in comparison to the great starfighters seen elsewhere in the saga. The might of the villains overcomes the pluck of the heroes, though many are lucky enough to escape with their lives.

Again, this is in no way a criticism. The design of Crait is just stunning, and the uniqueness of the miniaturised Death Star gun, Luke's projection and the ski speeders make for something really special. The attack on Hoth was a high point in Empire, and this is a great climax to an action-packed movie. But the parallels between the two battles are numerous and undeniable.
