11 Werewolf Movies That Broke All The Rules

In most werewolf movies, the wolf represents the main character's primal rage, and there is rarely more than one beast. That's not always the case, but it certainly is the norm, though that couldn't be said of Underworld and its sequels.

In the Underworld universe, werewolves and vampires are far more commonplace than the public realizes. For centuries, the vampires rule over the werewolves (Lycans in the films), which were seen as a subservient race. The two have been warring against one another for as long as most can remember.

One way that Underworld broke all the rules as they relate to werewolf movies stems from the Lycans' representation. Just as in most depictions, they are massive beasts capable of great feats of strength and ferocity, but transformations were heavily modified for the more action-oriented nature of the movie's narrative.

Soon after first transforming, Lycans could only change with the full moon, but after existing for centuries, most Lycans can transform at will, which is something that is rarely seen in any other representation of werewolves in film. Additionally, they are organized into clans and function in cells, much like terrorists.
