8. Jack Nicholson - Mars Attacks

Long before Tim Burton was being criticised for going too self-indulgent with his film visions, he made the excellent Mars Attacks! as a love letter to Z Movies from the 1950s with a stellar cast. It's a great homage and a great experience in itself and it's helped wonderfully by two performances by Jack Nicholson.

Not only does he play US President James Dale, who has to oversee his country being invaded by nefarious killer aliens, but he also plays a character at the other end of the moral scale (well, sort of) in sleazy Vegas hotel proprietor, Art Land. And if he'd got his own way, he would have done more as he loved the script so much he told Burton that he wanted to play EVERY role.
