12 Alternative Horror Movie Endings You Didn't See

6. A Dog's Head In The Box - Se7en (1995)

1408 John Cusack
Warner Bros.

How can you improve on perfection? Surely the last page of Se7en's script was met with thunderous applause and enthusiasm from the studio execs? It's got to be one of the most jaw-dropping moments in horror cinema: the moment you realise that John Doe had planned on being shot by Mills all along, fulfilling his masterpiece through his illustration of the remaining two sins, wrath and envy.

However, that Gwyneth Paltrow's head is in the box was apparently the cause of great concern for 20th Century Fox, who reportedly were not keen on the graphic finale, despite its desolate, pitch-black genius.

Here is one alternate ending, then, you definitely didn't see for one simple reason - it doesn't exist on film.

The studio wanted to replace Gwyneth's head with that of a dog, or at the very least, prevent Mills from shooting Doe in the head. Both leading man Pitt and director Fincher spent weeks wearing down the naysayers, to the extent that the Ernest Hemingway inspired epilogue, in which Somerset decides to remain on the police force, was added by way of placation or concession for the worried suits at Fox.

This closing sequence was filmed as a pick up and the intended conclusion remained thankfully intact and every bit as powerful.
