Not exactly this year’s best-loved movie, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice was lambasted by critics as grim, muddled and humourless and earned itself a measly 27% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But in the middle of all that doom and gloom, there was one shining light in the form of Ben Affleck’s portrayal of Bruce Wayne and his Caped Crusader alter ego.

That’s not to say Affleck’s casting didn’t court some controversy. The announcement that he would be next actor to take on the iconic role was met with some trepidation, probably because Affleck’s first and only other foray into superhero territory in 2003’s Daredevil wasn’t great. Likewise, when it came to light that this Batman would be a far more jaded, grittier incarnation who goes against comic canon and indiscriminately kills some fanboys and fangirls were up in arms. But by and large Affleck’s performance was praised as one of the only good parts of the movie, with some even hailing him as the best Batman of all time.
