3. Before Midnight

The Before franchise is effectively the most critically acclaimed trilogy in cinema history, all three of Richard Linklater's minimalist dramas enjoying universal acclaim for their acting, writing and direction.

Before Midnight concluded the trilogy on such a perfect note, beautifully melding hope and melancholy, but there's no guarantee it'll be the final movie.

Linklater and leads Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy tend to give each movie five years to breathe before even considering a sequel, so while some will be delighted at the idea of a fourth film, probably called Before Twilight, it really feels like tempting fate to try and strike gold four times in a row.

Has any franchise ever pulled it off before? Nothing springs to mind.

How Likely Is It?: This is incredibly hard to gauge. Before Midnight could easy be our final journey with Jesse and Celine, or Linklater and co. could end up quietly shooting the movie in 2022 and spring it on audiences totally out of nowhere, just as he did with the last film. 5/10
