Superman Returns is another case of an ironic attempt to revitalise a flagging season ending in disappointing results.

The franchise had lost its way badly after Richard Donner left Superman II, with the third film losing its mind and the fourth all sense of credibility, aside from a couple of interesting ideas badly handled. By the time that sequel was done, people were very much done with Superman as a viable star, and they'd stay that way until Superman Returns came about.

Returns is definitely an improvement on the comical sequels, but it struggled with its own problems (like the fact that Brandon Routh was seemingly cast solely on his look) and it wasn't the launching point for more Superman movies Warner Bros presumably hoped it could be.
