It's a wonderful feeling when a movie captures your imagination so persuasively that you just can't stop thinking about it.

And often this can lead to film fans channelling that enthusiasm into some creative - and at times even oddly believable - theories for said movies.

The world of fan theories is a deep rabbithole containing speculation both hilariously outlandish and bizarrely plausible, but regardless of likelihood, a truly great fan theory has to be two things - clever and entertaining.

We've all heard the most popular fan theories - all the Pixar movies exist in the same universe, Fight Club is basically a gritty reboot of Calvin & Hobbes and James Bond is just a codename - but 2018's film fandom sure didn't slouch in rustling up its fair share of brilliantly bonkers theories either.

Whether wishful thinking, a genuinely smart expansion of the original filmmakers' intent or just shamelessly silly, these are the best movie fan theories of 2018. You'll never be able to watch these 12 films the same way again...

12. Deadpool Fathered Cable's Wife - Deadpool 2

Courtesy of Cinema Blend, a theory started doing the rounds following Deadpool 2's release that there's far more to Cable's (Josh Brolin) wife than her simply being the motivation for his time-travelling quest.

The theory posits that Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) is actually the father of Cable's wife, noting their similar personalities, as Cable states that his wife would mask her pain with humour the same way that Wade does.

This isn't a particularly uncommon trait among anguished people, but the specific emphasis does feel weirdly pointed for a character we never really meet in any depth.

Furthermore, it would strengthen Cable's motivation to save Deadpool's life at the end of the film, which wouldn't merely be an act of kindness but one of necessity.

Keeping Deadpool alive allows him to travel back in time, prevent Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) from dying and allowing them to conceive their daughter, who would eventually become Cable's wife. Phew.

The originator of the theory outlines other supporting "evidence" - namely Cable's stylistic and thematic similarity to the first Terminator movie - which add up to a wildly circumstantial yet ludicrously entertaining stab in the dark.
