12 Best Natural Disaster Movies Of All Time

2. Asteroid Strike - Armageddon

The Day After Tomorrow
Buena Vista Pictures

There are many haters of this flick, and of Michael Bay in particular, but as far as big dumb natural disaster movies go, they don't come any funner than this. Sure, there is the over the top characters, the nonsensical idea of sending oil drillers into space and that awful Aerosmith song, but there is also a sense of action and adventure that never abates.

Unlike the ripoff Deep Impact which went for the human angle while placing the robotic Téa Leoni in the lead, Armageddon just wants you to have fun. The race against the clock is always on, and even though the characters are all caricatures, they are all likeable in their own way.

What makes the film work so well as popcorn entertainment is the insanely brilliant CGI, with Bay bringing to life what an asteroid strike would truly look like. As has been noted by many critics with Terminator 2, the special effects here seem better than anything produced today. The opening scene depicting a meteor shower in downtown New York is worth the price of admission alone.
