12 Best Natural Disaster Movies Of All Time
5. Tornado - Twister
This Helen Hunt starring film is the definition of great popcorn fun, the best that the 90’s had to offer in big dumb disaster flicks. The plot is always second here to the exhilarating and heart pounding sequences of twisters coming to life and taking all before them. It is that sense of dread and excitement that keeps the viewer on edge throughout, the unpredictability of the tornadoes being used perfectly here as a plot device.
The screenwriters borrow all their other plot points from the Ultimate guide to action cliches, with 'evil' characters dying, nice old ladies receiving non life threatening injuries and ex lovers reuniting. Thankfully the new love isn't killed here, but they might as well of with how little respect or depth her character is given.
But it is the hideous yet amazing twisters which are the star of the show, their ferocity and anger always there for the audience to see. While it is all quite spectacular, the film cleverly never forgets to remind us of the devastating human toll that these natural phenomenons can bring, making us cheer all the more for our protagonists in their noteworthy pursuits.
