12 Blockbuster Films That Flopped In America (But Were Loved Overseas)
8. Resident Evil: Retribution (2012) - $240.1 Million Worldwide
Budget: $65m Domestic Box Office: $42.3m International Box Office: $197.8m Somehow, the Resident Evil franchise has managed to last over a decade and spawn five movies (with a sixth on the way), despite none of them being particularly good. Fourth installment Afterlife marked the commercial highpoint for the long-running series with a worldwide total of $236m. However, follow-up Retribution became the lowest earner at the domestic box office since the original Resident Evil ten years prior. Still, the popularity of the franchise with international audiences saw the fifth chapter earn over 82% of its total box office gross from overseas markets to turn the movie into a financial success. It seems that franchise fatigue has set in with the Resident Evil series, domestically at least. Retribution did manage to open at the top of the box office, but a $21m debut weekend is a low number for such an established brand, especially with the added 3D premium. In fact, the movie's opening weekend accounted for almost half of its entire domestic gross, showing that demand for the latest sequel burned out incredibly quickly in the United States. Retribution had no such problems at the international box office with its most lucrative market being Japan, where the movie earned $48.3m, more than both The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man could manage in the country. The movie also posted strong numbers in China, Brazil, Russia, Germany and Mexico, proving that zombie-killing is indeed a universal language amongst cinema audiences.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
