12 Brilliant Movies That Completely Lied What They Were About
6. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Lie: Despite being popularly regarded as one of the greatest horror films ever made, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is on the surface a pretty straight-forward movie about a family of maniacs who slaughter a group of youngsters. What else could there be to it?
The Reality: In recent years, the film's apparently "vegetarian" agenda has been thoroughly examined, that the systematic murder of the victims is akin to that of animals killed for meat: they're captured against their will, bludgeoned, hung up on meet hooks and eventually killed for food, before being shoved in freezers. The characters even discuss the depravity of killing animals for meat early on, and in case you needed any more evidence, director Tobe Hooper himself has said, "In a way I thought the heart of the film was about meat; its about the chain of life and killing sentient beings", and even gave up eating meat during the movie's production.
