12 Brilliant Recent Horror Movies That Shocked Everyone

Horror can come in all shapes and sizes, but the most surprising format is Cargo's gripping drama. Post-apocalyptic films are ten a penny, but few take on quite the grounded approach of this Ozzie offering.

When Andy (Martin Freeman) loses his wife to a zombie plague that has eradicated vast swathes of the global population, and gets infected himself in the process, he has only two days to find somewhere safe for his baby daughter to live. If our current situation is stressing you out a bit, then don't worry; this plague has been caused by fracking and other environmental damage. So, not too similar.

On his journey, he discovers survivors who have adapted to life after the virus in a variety of ways - some far better than others. It's witnessing these less fortunate experiences first hand that helps Andy find his way to undoubtedly the best choice for adoptive family for baby Rosie: Australian Aboriginals, who understand and respect the new nature, turn out to be the best bet for his daughter's future.

It's unusually uplifting for a zombie film, and there's more of a moral message to it than Romero would bother with. Maybe it isn't as scary as some, but sometimes a little bit of wholesome horror is what we need.
