12 Castings For New Movies That Prove Hollywood Has Gone Insane
9. Mandy Patinkin - The Smurfs Reboot
Off the back of Homeland's success, Damian Lewis has been a busy man, adding three more TV shows to his CV and completing two movies. Mandy Patinkin was probably never going to do anything like that: he's notoriously picky with what he acts in after all.
Or he was, until he signed on to voice Papa Smurf in the upcoming reboot of the Smurfs, which is neither a prequel nor a sequel nor a real reboot, and which will somehow still be part of the film trilogy. Apparently you can just do what you want these days with classification.
Why would an actor of his considerable chops slum it for an undoubtedly terrible animation? Did he learn nothing from Bill Murray? And more to the point, what was it about Homeland that made Columbia think he was the right man for Papa Smurf?!
Will It Work
It literally doesn't matter. The fact that the first two movies made more than $900m from a combined budget of $215m indicates that the audiences who actually go out to see Smurfs films don't actually care about quality.
So Patinkin could just pick up his pay-check and slur his way through 90 minutes without an ounce of effort and it would probably still be profitable. Not that he'd be so unprofessional, obviously.
