8. Martin Terrier - The Gunman
The prospect of seeing Sean Penn as a want-away assassin in the mould of Leon is a wonderful one, even if some might turn their nose up at the idea of Taken's Pierre Morel reinventing another "serious" actor into an action star. The actor is only part of the appeal though; what this really boils down to is a genius story - grim, nihilistic, blackly humorous - that was begging to be adapted. In the original text, Martin Terrier's attempts to escape his former life end abysmally: he loses the girlfriend he wanted to change his life for because he's bad in bed, and he ends up a figure of fun working behind a bar for customers who openly mock him. That is the great twist of the story - that he goes out with a whimper - but with Morel in charge you can't really see anything so subtle at work. It's far more likely that he'll go for outright tragedy rather than pathos, and that Terrier will instead bite the big one. That is unless someone sniffs another action franchise of course...
