3. Santo Vs The Martian Invasion
When a group of youthful, Spanish-speaking ‘aliens’ (comprised of bare-chested men and women in short shorts) hijack the airwaves and threaten to nuke the planet unless Mankind abandons war and destroys its weapons, who you gonna call? How about Mexican wrestler El Santo, who appeared in over fifty films between 1958 and 1982?
Santo immediately challenges them to a wrestling match, and what do you know? The Martians freak out and flee to their spaceship (on loan from Ed Wood) with the luchador in hot pursuit, then as soon as he arrives, Santo realizes there’s a self-destruct lever in the centre of the room.
Best of all is the sequence when the Martians use their “Transformation Chamber” to allow them to pass for human, even though all it does is alter their hair and clothes. Furthering their anonymity, they adopt such everyday names as Argos, Kronos and Aphrodite, which is odd when the actors call themselves Wolf Ruvinskis, Natanael Leon Frankenstein and El Nazi.
