12 Controversial Movie Endings That Came Out Of Nowhere

3. The Car Flies - Grease

We've all been there, haven't we? Watching classic 1970s musical Grease, only to get to that always unexpected ending in which Danny (John Travolta) and Sandy (Olivia Newton John) climb into Greased Lightning, a car, and suddenly it's flying and they're driving off into the sky like that's not the most bizarre thing to have ever happened... Yes, it's a flight of fancy and a creative embellishment of sorts, but this ending has still continued to baffle audiences for decades. It doesn't matter that the movie is a musical, which is, of course, a fantastical and unrealistic element in its own right - there's nothing in the movie (save for that one line "If it was in any better condition, it would fly!") that prepares audiences for the car to take off at the end of the movie. It's just insane. Responses to this moment vary from "What the hell? That ruins the whole movie!" to "Oh, how lovely - the car can fly!", rendering it as a divisive moment. Whatever you think, it's certainly the kind of ending that you tend to forget about every time you watch Grease, meaning that it always seems to land as a surprise whenever you revisit the film.
