12 Crazy Sequel Pitches That Almost Ruined Great Films

1. David Cronenberg's Or David Lynch's Star Wars: Revenge Of The Jedi

Some might say the idea of The Fly and Videodrome director tackling the third Star Wars film would have been epic, given his profile among fans and in the industry as a whole (Cosmopolis aside of course), or that the Master of Odd David Lynch would have given Star Wars a completely new feel, but there is no way the industry was ready for either of these auteurs to tackle something as comparatively mainstream as the final film in Lucas' family friendly space opera.

Cronenberg has admitted that he was asked, but that creative control issues wouldn't have suited him:

"A long time ago I was approached for one second to do a 'Star Wars' movie, which at that time was called 'Revengeof the Jedi' and then it became Return of the Jedi. I was approached by Lucasfilm about that and it didn't take them long to realize that maybe that wasn't a good idea."

Lynch meanwhie has said that after meeting with George Lucas and getting the ranch tour, and being shown the early concept art for the film, there was €œabsolutely no way€ he would make it. And of course he then went and made Dune instead.

Let's be honest here, it wouldn't have been the films that really suffered here, it would have been the directors. Neither Cronenberg or Lynch would have been given enough creative control to really express themselves, and we would have ended up with a confused, half-cooked version of their vision mongrelised and stuck on to Lucas' original vision. Or in other words, we would have had an Alien 3 situation.

What do you think, did we miss any other ridiculous sounding sequel pitches you've heard about? Do you disagree that all of the above sound awful? Share your thoughts below.
