12 Critical Responses To 2017 Films That Make No Sense

8. Lady Macbeth

The Film:

A British art-house movie, this is a small-scale story about a young woman descending into madness while oppressed by a loveless marriage to an older man.

The Response:

Critics responded well, but there hasn't been a lot of awards attention and audiences have just ignored it, with a mere 6.9 rating on IMDb.

Why They Got It Wrong:

Lady Macbeth is one of the very best films of 2017.

The lack of attention this near-masterpiece has received is staggering. It might be a non-commercial film but there's plenty for casual audiences. It's got dark themes. It's got shocking twists. It's got thrills. It's even got plenty of sex for those who desire that stuff. What more could you want?

Light on dialogue, this instead uses its perfectly-crafted images to convey the gripping, powerful story. Now that is good film-making. The film is a testament to how less is more, and gets across so much material in only 90 minutes. Many indie films struggle to do nearly as much in over 2 hours.

It's sad this will likely get no awards attention at all - not even for Florence Pugh's masterful performance.
