12 Critically Acclaimed Recent Movies That Actually Sucked
10. Adrift
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 73% (6.2/10)
What The Critics Said: Shailene Woodley is largely agreed to anchor (sorry) this sea-swept romance-cum-survival drama, which also benefits from sharp cinematography and Baltasar Kormákur's rock solid direction.
Why It Actually Sucked: The more I think about Adrift, the less I like it. Yes, Woodley's performance is undeniably committed, but the film is severely compromised by its unnecessarily non-linear plot structure - cutting between the shipwreck and the prelude - which largely works against Kormákur's attempts to build suspense.
It's the film's third-act plot twist, however, that truly sends Adrift flying off the rails. Totally needless and more than a little tasteless, it adds a cringe-worthy, pretentious element to a movie that didn't need to be anything more than a simple survival drama.
