12 Depressing Alternate Endings That Were Way Better Than The Originals
9. Pineapple Express
Pineapple Express ends on a happy note, with Dale, Saul and Red heading off to hospital after a nice breakfast and a reaffirmation of their bromantic love for one another. The best part is the Pulp Fiction like diner scene that almost, ALMOST makes it the best option for the end.
In the alternate ending that appeared around the time of the film's DVD release, Dale and Saul are shown to have survived everything that goes down in the climax, and they exchange some banter along with a smoke. There's a particularly fine decision to have them apparently imagine they're being stalked by a bad guy, thanks to the paranoia induced by their spliff, before the ultimate pay-off...
And then of course there's that little hand-hold at the end, as the two finally realise their bromantic love for one another, and their developing relationship reaches its inevitable conclusion.
The Problem
You have to suspect that neither the death, nor the hand-holding would have tested well, despite how funny both are. Plus there's the small matter that the ending was shot for the DVD Extras and never actually had a chance of being included in the final film. Yep, it's just a prank.
