12 Directors Everyone Hates Working With (But Get Awesome Results)
4. Marc Forster
His Reputation: Here's a director who has just been an unfortunate magnet for controversy over the last few years, and it's not all his fault. Despite directing numerous films without trouble, 2008's Quantum of Solace was a production nightmare, with the movie pressing on despite the Writer's Guild strike resulting in an incomplete script which Forster and star Daniel Craig essentially had to re-write and punch up themselves. That the results weren't a complete and utter disaster is a miracle, even if the film is considered a huge disappointment compared to both Casino Royale and the subsequent Skyfall, and Forster is said to have struggled with the big-budget shoot. Forster was again beset by production problems on World War Z, albeit this time something he had a little more control over, as he and producer-star Brad Pitt clashed over various aspects of the shoot to the extent that they stopped talking and began relaying messages through others. When it transpired that the third act just didn't work, extensive reshoots took place to completely reshape the end of the movie, reportedly filming as much as 30 or 40 minutes of new footage. Forster hasn't committed to another feature project yet, and given the stress of these two major tentpole flicks, who can be surprised, even if it's undeniably going to reflect badly on him when studio execs and actors consider working with him in the future. Why He's Worth Working With: Even so, he directed Halle Berry to an Oscar in Monster's Ball, and earned Johnny Depp a nod for the Best Picture-nominated Finding Neverland. Furthermore, against tremendous odds, both Quantum and World War Z were critically and commercially successful, so while these tricky shoots suggest that the director is best-suited to lower-budget fare, the juice has proved very much worth the squeeze in the long run. Unlucky or too "green" for blockbuster fare? It's probably a bit of both, but he got by on the skin of his teeth both times, even if he's clearly better suited for dramas.
