His Reputation: Legendary French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard has been on poor terms with actors for over half a century. All the way back to 1963's aptly-titled Contempt, he referred to Brigitte Bardot as "unbearable" to work with, while he apparently tormented Maruschka Detmers on the set of 1983's First Name: Carmen, and also came to blows with fellow filmmaker Francois Truffaut in 1973 over his treatment of actor Jean-Pierre LĂ©aud (who played Antoine Doinel in Truffaut's 400 Blows), though considering the two worked together on nine films, could it really have been that bad? This eventually led to Godard pretty much swearing off name actors altogether, and over the last few decades, he's barely worked with famous faces at all, using unknowns as suits the budgetary needs of his recent experimental work in particular. Why He's Worth Working With: Still, he's one of the most ground-breaking filmmakers of all time, and if an offer from him ever came a-knocking, there's few actors from Europe or Hollywood who could surely resist the offer. Even so, he seems pretty satisfied with the strange abstract work these days, so it'll likely never happen anyway, to the nervous relief of actors everywhere...
