12 Directors Everyone Hates Working With (But Get Awesome Results)

8. Abdellatif Kechiche

His Reputation: Though Abdellatif Kechiche might not be a name you immediately recognise, he has directed 5 films to date, his latest being the widely-praised erotic drama Blue is the Warmest Colour. However, in the months that followed the movie's success at the Cannes Film Festival, its two stars Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos, who play lesbian lovers in the movie, called working with Kechiche "horrible" and even "embarrassing". They complained that he was incredibly demanding and opted not to have the movie's extensive sex scenes planned out in advance, which naturally made it much more difficult for the actresses, both of who said they'd never work with him again. Granted, this is the first of Kechiche's movies to earn major attention in English-speaking countries, but it doesn't exactly paint a flattering image of the director, all the more so when he made Seydoux cry at a televised press conference by berating her "ungrateful" attitude. Why He's Worth Working With: Still, the movie speaks for itself as a modern dramatic masterpiece, and though it was a little too niche for the Oscars, it did score Cannes' prestigious Palme d'Or (which, in unprecedented fashion, was shared with the two lead actresses) as well as almost universal critical acclaim. As such, Kechiche's career has survived the negative PR onslaught following the movie's release, and he's currently directing La blessure, starring Gérard Depardieu. Perhaps young ingenue actresses might be a little more wary of working with him, though...
