12 Directors Who Blamed Studios For Failed Movies
5. Gavin Hood - X-Men Origins: Wolverine
When a single movie manages to derail a studio's entire plans, including the abolition of future Origin movies, then you know a film has bombed big time. Such was the case with the much derided X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the first and ultimately only entry in the 'origins' films. Everything about the film fell flat, from the lame action scenes to the disinteresting story, and the awful first appearances of comic heroes Gambit and Deadpool.
If the film's Director Gavin Hood is to be believed, the blame does not lay with him, but with the big wigs at Fox. In fact according to Hood, he didn't even want Gambit or Deadpool in his film at all. At a press junket for his 2016 film Eye in the Sky, Hood opened his heart about the trials and tribulations he endured making the film, with studio interference occurring throughout all aspects of production. Gambit and Deadpool were added to the film at the studio's behest, and even the name of the film was changed without his knowledge, Hugh Jackman informing him after he read it on IMDB!
Hood also noted that he didn't see eye to eye with his second unit director, who was primarily responsible for the stunt sequences, and loathed the 'stunt casting' thrust upon him. To Hood's credit he was extremely positive of his experience working with Jackman and "owned his mistakes", while still clearly pointing the blame for the disastrous experience at Fox Studios.
