12 Directors You Didn't Know Almost Made Comic Book Movies

10. Oliver Stone - Elektra: Assassin

After finishing up production on JFK in 1991, the controversial filmmaker considered making an Elektra movie based on Frank Miller and Bill Sienkiewicz's 1986-1987 comic series Elektra: Assassin.

Stone had gorgeous volleyball player Gabrielle Reece in mind to play the title character, while the plot would deviate somewhat from the source material due to rights issues (S.H.I.E.L.D. and Nick Fury would be switched out with Elektra instead facing off against ninja clan The Hand).

Fox eventually acquired the movie rights, however, and Stone bailed, with the 2003 movie eventually being made by Mark Steven Johnson to highly mixed reviews (though that Director's Cut is actually pretty decent).

Would It Have Worked?: Difficult to say as this is so unlike anything Stone has actually made. It'd probably have more of a conscience and a far greater political lean than just about any other superhero movie, and be totally unique to that end, though Stone's such an inconsistent filmmaker it's really a roll of the dice.
