12 Fiendishly Clever Comic Book Movie In-Jokes You Probably Missed

12. Hulk's Colour Problems

Grey Hulk
Marvel

In a deleted scene that never made it into The Incredible Hulk - there's got to be some self-esteem issues there - there's a smart in-joke that references the early days of Hulk in his comic book form. The deleted scene relates Blonksy's first encounter with the Hulk, and the unbalanced military man describes the monster in the following terms: "8 foot, 1500 pounds easy... and green. Or grey, sir. Greenish-grey. It was very dark, I couldn't tell."

It's a fairly throw-away comment, but for comic book fans it references the infamous colouring problems that plagued the Hulk in early versions of the comic, which unintentionally gave the character his most famous characteristic, after the originally grey colouring came out grey in printing.

This is one of a number of deleted scenes from the film, including the now famous alternate, extended opening sequence featuring a blink-and-you'll-miss-it shot of the still-frozen Captain America, and the attempted suicide moment that Mark Ruffalo references in The Avengers.
