Hong Kong action hero and occasional Hollywood director John Woo had some well-documented trouble with transferring his unique, overblown style to US filmmaking.
While many of the legendary director’s American efforts are undeniably impressive spectacles like 1999’s cheesy but nonetheless amazing Face Off, none of them recapture the lightning in a bottle intensity of the director’s best work such as 1990’s unparalleled Hard Boiled, an action thriller which can lay claim to being amongst the genre’s most impressive artistic achievements.
