12 Great Actors Trapped In AWFUL Horror Movies

11. Helen Mirren - Winchester

Olivia Wilde The Lazarus Effect
Lionsgate

Winning an Oscar for her performance as Elizabeth II in The Queen alongside earning nominations for her roles in The Madness Of King George, Gosford Park, and The Last Station, Dame Helen Mirren is one of the finest acting talents working today. So when she appeared in haunted house horror Winchester there was hopes that this flick would have potential.

It did not.

Based on the real-life story of Sarah Winchester (Mirren) and her labyrinthine Californian home she kept under construction, believing it would keep the spirits of those killed by the Winchester rifle at bay, the film sees doctor Eric Price (Jason Clarke) arrive at the house to investigate and assess Sarah's well-being.

Ripped apart by reviews, Winchester turned out to be nothing more than a series of uninteresting jump scares viewers could see coming a mile away. Despite the Spierig Brothers (Jigsaw) receiving some acknowledgement for their technical competence, with Mirren also gaining credit for giving this schlock-fest some class, the biggest disappointment of Winchester was how it threw away its chances to be genuinely interesting.

This film could have been an intriguing character study of the real-life Winchester widow, but all audiences got was another forgettable horror film.
