12 Great Recent Movies You'll Never Be Able To Watch Again

1. The House That Jack Built

Leave No Trace
IFC Films

The House That Jack Built not only reaffirms Lars von Trier as the master of films you never want to watch again, but it also sees him outdoing himself. Compared to this gruesome serial killer drama, 2009's Antichrist looks like an easy ride.

The House That Jack Built doesn't like you. It doesn't care about your feelings. It sets out to disgust you, horrify you, depress you and shock you at every single turn and judging by the fact that over a hundred people walked out at its Cannes screening, it certainly succeeded in doing that.

House That Jack Built is a truly horrid film. Not only does it present sickening sadism and grisly, drawn-out murder scenes aplenty, but it also gets us right inside the mind of the depraved killer (Matt Dillon) at its centre. As such, it's one of the darkest and most depressing movies of recent times.

It is a good film though. Thanks to Trier's assured direction, Matt Dillon's great performance and a thought-provoking script filled with philosophical undertones, this is an interesting film where you can definitely get something out of it.

But, nonetheless: think very carefully before sitting down for this one. If you're squeamish, you will be traumatised.

And, as it goes without saying, it's hard to imagine anyone watching this more than once.
