Unlike Disney's version, Dame Gothel does not steal Rapunzel from her parents. Rapunzel is actually given to Gothel by her parents to pay for the plants that Rapunzel's father steals from her garden.
In the Brother's Grimm version of the tale, the Prince hears Rapunzel singing in the tower and falls for her. When he gets Rapunzel to lower her long hair and let him in, the pair fall in love and she becomes pregnant with twins.
Learning what has happened, Gothel cuts off Rapunzel's hair and throws her out into the wild. Using Rapunzel's long hair, Gothal tricks the Prince to come up to the tower where she promptly throws him out the window and he is blinded by the thorns below.
Wandering around blind, the Prince hears Rapunzel singing and finds her and his twins. Happy to be united, Rapunzel's tears heal the Prince's eyes and they return to his kingdom.
All's well that ends well.
