12 Huge Movies That Captain Marvel Destroyed At The Box Office
10. Suicide Squad
Box Office: $746.8 million
Suicide Squad caught us all off-guard with its box office performance in 2016. Though it made less than its predecessor (Batman v Superman), it was never under the same kind of pressure to succeed, so despite its overwhelmingly negative reviews, it exceeded expectations.
A phenomenal trailer (that made the film look a lot better than it turned out to be) undoubtedly aided in its success, presenting the colourful misfits as the perfect antidote to the DCEU's mind-numbingly broody heroes. Other things that likely worked in its favour were the positive reactions to Margot Robbie's performance as Harley Quinn and the intrigue surrounding Jared Leto's bizarre Joker.
An ensemble piece on the surface, the film was essentially a vehicle for Harley Quinn's live-action debut. But not even one of DC's most iconic female characters could stop Captain Marvel from sailing ahead.
Of course, when you factor in the film's more kid-friendly approach and the reality that Carol Danvers is a better role model, you can begin to see how it managed that. Still though, it's a feat that should be applauded.
