Three months ago, it seemed pretty likely that the Tom Cruise-starring Mummy reboot would surge to easy box office success, probably landing in the $500-600 million range with help from overseas markets.
Before Wonder Woman's reviews came out, it was pegged to perform about the same, and a lot of analysts seemed adamant that the consistency of the Cruise "brand" would give him the edge over the relatively untested Gal Gadot and shaky reputation of the DCEU.
However, The Mummy ended up under-performing by about 25% and opened behind Wonder Woman in its first weekend. To rub salt in the wound, Wonder Woman has just doubled The Mummy's worldwide total at the time of press, and honestly, who would've seen that coming pre-release?
