12 Key Influences In Batman Begins

11. Bats As The Source Of Bruce's Fear

The film begins with young Bruce falling down a well on the grounds of Wayne Manor, and subsequently being attacked by a swarm of bats, causing him to develop a fear of the animals. This isn't an original Christopher Nolan idea though: it was in fact touched on somewhat in Batman Forever also, and stems from the legendary 1986 Frank Miller Batman comic The Dark Knight Returns, where Bruce falls into a cave and is attacked by bats, creating the fear that he would eventually come to conquer as the iconic superhero. More so than Joel Schumacher's film, though, Nolan has intentionally replicated the look of the scene straight from the comic panel, a scene so iconic that it was briefly recalled again in The Dark Knight Rises.
