6. Switch Calls Neo "Coppertop" - A Reference To The Fact That He's Really A Battery
Before Neo encounters Morpheus he has absolutely no idea about his situation - for him, the Matrix is reality, and no other planes of existence exist beyond it. It's at this stage in the story that he meets Morpheus's associates for the first time, including one by the name of Switch. Switch might not be the most memorable character in The Matrix but he does deliver one important, cryptic line to Neo when he calls him "coppertop". On the surface, the name seems completely absurd, given Neo's dark hair, but it's actually a subtle reference to the fact that Neo's true nature in the physical world is as a source of energy for the machines. Indeed, moments later we see Morpheus holding up a battery to the camera, its top made of copper.
